The company who brought you The Matrix and The Cerulean credit cards, Continental Finance, is now involved with a new offering The Verve Credit Card. Move along, folks. Theres nothing to see here. But if you have a morbid curiosity, keep reading. I hate it that they named it Verve because I loved a band called The Verve, which sang the 1. Bitter Sweet Symphony. If you dont remember the song, check out the You. Tube video. I really like the song. I wish I could say the same for the Verve Master. Card. Until recently, the payment processor was Discover. Now, the card transactions are processed by Master. Card. This is also true for the Matrix and the Cerulean credit cards, which are not available at the moment. I originally reviewed the Verve last September, but Im reviewing it again because there have been so many changes. Believe it or not, some of the terms have actually improved. The issuer is now Mid America Bank Trust Company and the card is serviced by Continental Finance. This is a hybrid credit card, so depending on your credit history and score, you could be offered an unsecured card, a partially secured card, or a fully secured card. Rates and fees. Let me just say that this card could get expensive, especially if you carry a balance. Be sure you read all the disclosure statements so you know what youre getting into with this card. Then read it again for good measure. Annual fee Its 1. After that, its 9. To give you some perspective, most secured credit cards have fees of 3. The 1. 25 fee will be billed once your account is opened. So right off the bat, your limit is decreased by 1. APR You get a variable rate of 2. Dont carry a balance. Just dont. Its easy to get into credit card debt when youre paying a high interest rate. And this is very, very high. Additional card fee Its 3. Balance transfers Not applicable. APR for cash advances You get the same 2. The transaction fee is 5 percent and the interest clock starts ticking right away. Monthly maintenance fee Theres a 6. Its waived for the first year. So at least theres that. Foreign transaction fees Its 3 percent, which is within the normal range. Credit limit You get a credit limit of 5. Now, the previous version of this card had a hefty credit limit increase fee. I dont see this in the fine print any longer, but that doesnt mean it no longer exists. Sometimes, everything you need to know isnt provided online. If you have this card and have received the disclosure statements, let me know if you see a limit increase fee. Security Deposit You will be told in a letter what your minimum deposit is if youre approved for a secured or partially secured card. After 9. 0 daysand if youve made on time payments for three months in a rowyou can increase your deposit up to a maximum of 2,0. You do not earn interest on your deposit. Note If you get approved for the partially secured or secured card version of the Verve Credit Card, be sure you read Terms and Conditions of Your Deposit Account, which is located at the bottom of the Terms   Conditions document. Other fees Late payment fee, return payment fee, and more. The bottom line. I understand that there are some of you who dont have many, if any, decent options. If this is the only card you qualify for, focus on keeping a low balance and pay your bill in full and on time. You get a 2. 5 day grace period and thats generous. Your goal is to rebuild your credit. If your credit score improves a lot after the first year, you might be able to get a card with better terms and without a monthly maintenance fee. Even if you think this is the only card you can get approved for, take a look at my list of secured cards, The Best and Worst Secured Credit Cards. Focus on the lower part of the middle tier cards and see if you can find a better option than the Verve Credit Card. Note Credit card agreements change frequently.
